Concept information
Preferred term
chan
Definition
- This concept represents an indigenous form of Chinese Buddhism that initially developed in the sixth century and subsequently spread to the rest of East Asia. It is characterised by novel use of language, development of new narrative forms, and valorisation of the direct and embodied realisation of Buddhist awakening. Chan inspired a monochromatic spiritual pictural trend practiced by the Chan monks, usually called “Chan painting”, characterised by lightning simplicity, dazzling execution, economy of strokes and strength of brushstrokes.
