- A Macedonian general and close companion of Alexander the Great, Ptolemy I Soter founded the Ptolemaic Kingdom in Egypt. As king and pharaoh from 305/304 to 282 BCE, he established a stable Hellenistic state and developed Alexandria into a major center of Greek culture. His dynasty ruled Egypt until 30 BCE, making the kingdom one of the principal strongholds of Hellenistic civilization.
